Prepare Your Pet's For The Storm
We Really Love Our Pets This Hurricane Season, have a kit and a plan for your pet(s). We love and care for them, and a hurricane is NOT the place to leave your friend alone at home.
Plan to take them with you if you are to evacuate. We have seen and heard of so may horror stories of pets left behind.
DO NOT STAY WITH YOUR PET IF YOU ARE IN A MANDANTORY EVACUATION ZONE.
Make the plans NOW to take your pet(s) with you in the case of an evacuation! Don't wait till the Hurricane Watch is issued for your area.
Below are some of the items needed whether you stay or evacuate. Either way, You Will Need Them To Care For Your Pet(s).

During The Storm:

Stay in your safe room during the storm. Make sure you have this room prepared also with the needed items to ride the storm out.
Also, ask yourself the question. Will my pet be with me during the storm in my safe room, or will I need to have a safe room prepared for my pet also?
Most large pets, especially large dogs have what is called "Thunder Syndrome". They are scared of loud noises such as Thunder. During a storm, the loud wind and objects hitting your home could cause your pet anxiety, causing them to be overly unruley. Talk with your veterinarian on what you can do to help your pet ride out the storm. Also ask, if your pet should have it's own safe room during the storm. Remember, a large pet such as a dog can be a handful during a hurricane.
If your planning on going to a pet friendly shelter. Remember you will need all of your pets documentation tags, papers, tec. As well as food, water, bowls, medications, and any specific care instructions, and cleanup items such as newspaper, plastic bags. Pet friendly shelters are available on a first come first serve basis.

After The Storm:

Do Not venture out of your home immidietly. Do Not allow your pet outside until your able to make sure your yard is safe!
After the storm, if your pet goes into your yard normally, ask yourself these questions:

Is my yard fenced?
If your yard is fenced, chances are the fence can be damaged during the storm. Have a backup plan if you want to let your dog in your yard after you have cleaned it up of debris. A stake and cable available at most pet supply stores is an inexpensive way to make sure your pet doesn't roam the nieghborhood after the storm. This could lead to your pet being injured or killed due to the debris and downed power lines.
Was your pet injured during the storm?:
You will need to know where the emergency veterinarian center is located. These are normally open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. But, after a hurricane, these offices may not be open. Where will there be emergency care given to pets and livestock after a hurricane? Another great question to ask your veterinarian, or you can contact your local Emergency Operations Center for more infomation.
If your pet is lost prior to, during or after the storm, make sure you are able to identify your pet. Keep a recent picture handy in the case you may have to locate your pet. Also, where will pets be taken to be claimed by their owners?
